During his playing days, Platini was crowned Ballon d’Or winner three times in a row between 1983 and 1985, but he has been caught up in controversy recently.

Qatar hosting the 2022 World Cup has been controversial as allegations of corruption and bribery within FIFA raised questions over the legitimacy of the bid from Qatar.

Platini was banned from all footballing activity after receiving and accepting a payment from Sepp Blatter.

Though he claimed last year that he had been cleared by Swiss judges and is taking legal action over defamation and false accusation.

He said: ‘I will come back – where, when, how? It is too early to tell. But I will come back to football.’

The former president of Uefa and head of European football was detained by French police on Tuesday morning (18th June 2019) in Nanterre, a western suburb of Paris, as part of the investigation into corruption surrounding how the 2022 World Cup hosting rights were awarded.

The report also claims that Claude Gueant, who formerly advised ex-French president Nicolas Sarkozy as Secretary General, has also been taken in for questioning but has not been arrested.

Former vice-president Jack Warner claimed an e-mail had been publicised amid allegations Qatar had ‘bought’ the Wold Cup – although the bid team have denied any wrongdoing.

Of the 22-man FIFA executive committee who voted on the host nations of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, 10 have been banned or are serving a ban for corruption breaches.

There have also been issues regarding migrant workers’ rights in Qatar with estimates that up to 4,000 may die before the start of the tournament.

That’s not all, last year Platini claimed that the France 1998 World Cup was fixed.

He said: “When we organised the calendar, we did a little trickery. If we finished first in the group and Brazil finished first, we could not meet before the final.”

“We did not get bored for six years to organise the World Cup to not do some little shenanigans.

“You think that the others did not do it for their World Cup France-Brazil in the final, it was the dream of everyone.”
