Sam Smith ‘My Oasis’ ft Burna Boy Review: A perfect blend of Pop-soul and Afro-fusion

^^^^^This is my first music review, so be fair, don’t bash much….so you can get some more to bash me on later.^^^^

Sam Smith has returned with new song “My Oasis” featuring Burna Boy. The track follows their Demi Lovato duet “I’m Ready.”

When Sam Smith first teased the single on Instagram yesterday (July 29), posting a snippet of the song, I had butterflies in my belly.

Just a few bells and strings, and we all could anticipate that it would be a perfect fusion.

Many Nigerians on social media even joked that teaming up with Burna would further help Sam’s career, to be fair, his social media announcement already has over 14k retweets (that should be his most engaging post on Twitter this year).

Since 2013, Sam Smith has been one of my best singers, Burna has always been in the picture, L.I.F.E was an astounding piece, but African Giant, really put him up there for me.

According to Burna Boy, the track was recorded on July 2nd 2020, which happens to be after the initial release date of Sam Smith’s third studio album. (So to everyone gutted on Sam Smith postponing the release of his album, perhaps it was a blessing in disguise).

On the song, the pair sound like a dreamy couple as they blend perfectly. Listening to this song, you can feel the desire and fusion between the duo.

“This track has been a beautiful release of emotions for me during this time,” Sam Smith said in a statement. “I’ve been a fan of Burna Boy for years now and am so happy to have a tune with him.”

*Well, this is obvious in the way the pair blend*

To be fair, Burna has really done well in recent times, when we look at the international collaborations he has done —- and how he performed on those tracks.

One thing I like about Burna is how he flows naturally regardless of who he is teaming up with. Just like on Stormzy’s Own It, Burna flows in pidgin English. He sings; “Wait a minute, tell me why you’re movin’ like that
Na, you wey I choose, but you make it so hard
I gave you my heart, you’re makin’ it so dark
But there’s nothing I can do when it comes to you
You takin’ it for granted
A lot of silence, the river don’t end
‘Cause I want you all, yeah
You all, you all, you all.”

Sam Smith, who is one of the best soul singers for me, on this track, Sam sings of helplessly needing someone, even though the return of this partner’s affections seems questionable. “You play with my emotions/I’m flowing like the ocean/I pray for your devotion/’Cause there’s nothing I can do when it comes to you,” Smith sings on the chorus.

No one does Soul better than Sam Smith, and you’d agree with me that pairing is a perfect one. You can enjoy the track below;

[Verse 1: Sam Smith]
Keep thinkin’ that I’m seein’ water
You’re playing tricks on me in the sun
See your shadow in the courtyard
Stays until the day is done
The desert don’t end, the rain don’t fall
And I can’t pretend I don’t want you all
‘Cause I want you all
You all, you all, you all

[Pre-Chorus: Sam Smith]
Oh, babe, I really need you
My feelings gettin’ deeper
My mind is in a free fall
But there’s nothing I can do when it comes to you
You play with my emotions
I’m flowin’ like the ocean
I pray for your devotion
‘Cause there’s nothing I can do when it comes to you

[Chorus: Sam Smith]
My oa, my oa, my oasis
My oa, my oa, my oasis
My oa, my oa, my oasis
There’s nothing I can do when it comes to you

[Verse 2: Burna Boy] Wait a minute, tell me why you’re movin’ like that
Na, you wey I choose, but you make it so hard
I gave you my heart, you’re makin’ it so dark
But there’s nothing I can do when it comes to you
You takin’ it for granted
A lot of silence, the river don’t end
‘Cause I want you all, yeah
You all, you all, you all

[Pre-Chorus: Sam Smith]
Oh, babe, I really need you
My feelings gettin’ deeper
My mind is in a free fall
But there’s nothing I can do when it comes to you
You play with my emotions
I’m flowin’ like the ocean
I pray for your devotion
‘Cause there’s nothing I can do when it comes to you

[Chorus: Sam Smith]
My oa, my oa, my oasis
My oa, my oa, my oasis
My oa, my oa, my oasis
There’s nothing I can do when it comes to you
My oa, my oa, my oasis
My oa, my oa, my oasis
My oa, my oa, my oasis
There’s nothing I can do when it comes to you
[Outro: Burna Boy]
I remember me tell you [?]
