Gunmen attack prison in Owerri, set inmates free

Unidentified gunmen have reportedly attacked the federal Correctional Centre and police command headquarters in Owerri, Imo state.

It was learnt that some inmates were set free by the gunmen who took advantage of the calm atmosphere of Easter.

The attack was said to have happened in the early hours of Monday, April 5.

There was said to have been heavy gunfire during the attack.

This development comes after the state Commissioner of Police, Nasiru Mohammed said that he had deployed over 4760 personnel to ensure maximum security during and after the Easter celebration.

When The Cable contacted the police command spokesman, Ikeokwu Orlando for comment on the incident, he only said, ”I will get back to you”.

The number of inmates released from the facility is yet unknown.
